Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during a quit smoking hypnotherapy session in Carrickmacross?
Your session begins with a detailed discussion about your smoking habits, triggers, and the situations that lead you to smoke. This helps identify the patterns and emotional associations that have kept the habit in place.
You are then guided into a deeply relaxed state where your mind becomes more receptive to positive change. Using tailored hypnotherapy techniques, the emotional and behavioural links to smoking are addressed, helping you view cigarettes differently and reducing the desire to smoke.
Whether your smoking is connected to stress, boredom, social situations, routine, or emotional comfort, the session is adapted to your specific needs. Throughout the process, you remain aware, comfortable, and in control.
The aim is to help you break free from smoking, feel more confident as a non-smoker, and move forward without relying on cigarettes.
How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need to quit smoking?
The quit smoking programme is designed as a single session. It is one focused, individually tailored appointment of about an hour, known as my Rapid Smoking Cessation Protocol.
The session works with the emotional triggers, routines and habitual associations that have kept smoking in place, and it is shaped around the specific reasons behind your own habit.
Everyone responds differently. Some people find one session is enough to make the change they want, while others find the process takes more time. If you have questions or need support afterwards, I am here to help.
Will I gain weight if I use hypnotherapy to quit smoking?
Weight gain is not an inevitable consequence of giving up smoking. Many people gain weight because they replace cigarettes with snacking, using food as an alternative source of comfort, stress relief or routine.
My approach is designed to address the underlying reasons for smoking, rather than simply removing the cigarettes themselves. During the session, I include suggestions to help you move forward without feeling the need to replace cigarettes with food.
Some clients find they feel less urge to substitute cigarettes with chocolate, sweets or snacking, and become more aware of their overall health and wellbeing.
If you have concerns about your weight after stopping smoking, we can talk these through during your free consultation.
Can hypnosis really help me stop smoking if I have a weak will?
Many people feel they have a weak will because previous attempts to stop didn’t last. In reality, smoking is often held in place by automatic habits and associations, which is why relying on willpower alone can feel like such a struggle.
Hypnotherapy works with those automatic patterns rather than asking you to fight them through effort alone. The aim is to help your decision to stop and your everyday habits pull in the same direction.
Your own motivation still matters, and everyone responds differently, but you don’t need exceptional willpower to benefit from the session.
Will I experience severe nicotine withdrawal symptoms after hypnosis?
Everyone’s experience of stopping is different. Some people notice very little in the way of withdrawal, while others find the first days or weeks more challenging.
Much of the tension, irritability and restlessness people associate with stopping is linked to habit and expectation. During the session, I include suggestions for calm and steadiness, and you learn a simple anchor you can use to access a relaxed state when you need it.
If you have concerns about withdrawal symptoms, your health or any medication, please speak with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional. Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy and is not a substitute for medical advice.
Will I be forced to do anything against my will during hypnosis?
Absolutely not. Clinical hypnotherapy is very different from stage hypnosis. You cannot be made to do, say, or believe anything that goes against your personal values, ethics, or sense of choice. You remain fully aware and in control of your mind and body throughout the session.
Hypnosis is a collaborative process based on consent and cooperation. I act as a guide, using carefully chosen language to support your goal of becoming a non-smoker.
If any suggestion does not feel right or does not align with your true intention to quit, your mind will simply reject it. You remain the author of your own change throughout the experience.
What if I am someone who cannot be hypnotised to stop smoking?
Virtually everyone can experience hypnosis, provided they are willing to engage with the process and follow simple guidance. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention, similar to being absorbed in a good book or daydreaming on a familiar journey.
There is no need to fall into a deep sleep or lose awareness for suggestions to take effect. A light state of relaxation is sufficient for the subconscious mind to respond positively to change around smoking.
With a genuine desire to become a non-smoker and a willingness to follow the guidance provided, hypnotherapy can be an effective process for you.
Can hypnotherapy help with the anxiety of giving up smoking?
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people hesitate to quit smoking, as many feel cigarettes help them manage stress. For many people, though, the sense of calm a cigarette brings is closely tied to habit and the short break it provides.
Hypnotherapy can support you in finding other ways to feel calm. During the session, you are guided into a relaxed and steady state and shown a simple relaxation anchor, a mental and physical cue you can use to return to a calmer state when challenging moments arise.
The session also includes suggestions for calm breathing and emotional steadiness, giving you practical tools you can use in daily life.
If anxiety is a significant part of your life, it is also worth speaking with your GP, and you may find my Anxiety and Stress Relief hypnotherapy helpful.
Will I still crave a cigarette when I am around other smokers?
Being around other smokers can be one of the most challenging situations when you stop, because smoking is often closely linked with social occasions.
During the session, I work with the associations between socialising and smoking, with the aim of helping you feel more comfortable in those situations without needing a cigarette. The anchor techniques you learn can also help you stay calm and steady when others are smoking around you.
Everyone responds differently, and it can help to plan ahead for situations you know may be difficult, particularly in the early weeks.
What should I do to prepare for my stop smoking hypnotherapy appointment?
Preparation begins with a firm personal decision that you are ready to stop smoking for yourself, rather than to please someone else. That genuine inner commitment is the most important factor you bring to the session.
On the day of your appointment in Carrickmacross, wear comfortable clothing so you can relax easily throughout the process. It helps to avoid excessive caffeine or stimulants beforehand, as these can make physical relaxation more difficult.
It is also useful to bring a clear sense of your main reasons for wanting to quit, whether improving health, saving money, or setting a positive example for those around you. Having these motivations in mind helps the session remain focused and effective.
